Once More to the Lake

Gull Mind: Last Day Before Snow

They crowd
onto a small spit,
turning the land white
on its last day to be green,
quiet and unmoving
until they rise as one body,
circle,
cry out,
settle back
to the grass.

Knowing why
would not add
to the beauty.
